Mikel Brown Jr. is one of the few players in this draft I can admittedly say could outplay my grading metric...and I honestly hope he tiers up to the 'All-Star' level. A lot of context given his back injury truly brings him down a notch but when healthy we saw a lead guard who operates as such a possession assembler. While many guards attempt to overwhelm defenses with velocity, Brown seems to initiate through precision. Readily accessible dribble reads, pocket passes, manipulative hesitation moves,  and a scoring arsenal that tethers him to a larger blueprint on every possession. But the back injury still left many woes defensively, athletically and sometimes mentally. There's even sometimes a tug-o-war style that exists with his playmaking versus scoring. All that being said I'd be willing to bet on the former for the navigating playcreator whose potential on the maplewood seems to just be mapping. 

PROS

  • Cerebral guard with natural command of offensive structure
  • Advanced pick-and-roll conductor with great multi-manipulation ability
  • Deep shooting range forces defenses to extend coverage
  • Offensive scalability allows on-ball/off-ball roster construction
  • Uses change of pace more than raw athleticism to generate offensive advantages

CONS

  • Does not possess overwhelming burst or size
  • Growth spurt caused nagging back injuries
  • Can occasionally prioritize playmaking over scoring aggression and vice-versa
  • In-between game is definitely a concern
  • Controversial ceiling and floor
  • Has a home-run hitting offensive ability that causes a string of turnovers.
